My Furnace Stopped Working? 7-Step Emergency Checklist (Northern VA)
It is the worst-case scenario: It’s 20°F in Woodbridge, the wind is howling, and you just realized your house is getting colder by the minute.
Before you pay an emergency dispatch fee, take a deep breath. At DR HVAC Inc., we serve homeowners from Arlington to Dumfries, and we see this every winter. The truth is, over 40% of "no heat" calls can be fixed by the homeowner in under 15 minutes.
This guide is your emergency triage. It is designed for the specific systems we use here in Northern Virginia—specifically Heat Pumps and Gas Furnaces.
Safety First: Gas Leak Protocol
If you smell rotten eggs (sulfur/mercaptan), you likely have a gas leak.
- DO NOT touch any electrical switches, lights, or use your phone inside the home
- EVACUATE everyone from the building immediately
- CALL Washington Gas at 844-WASHGAS (927-4427) or 911 from outside
Identify Your System Type
This is critical—following the wrong checklist wastes time. Northern Virginia homes have two main heating systems:
Heat Pump System
Common in newer subdivisions (Lake Ridge, Manassas) and all-electric homes. The outdoor unit runs during heating mode.

Every Virginia furnace has a power switch on or near the unit that looks exactly like a light switch. Check if it's flipped to OFF (kids and pets love this one). Flip it back ON.
Remove your Nest, Ecobee, or Honeywell from the wall. If it takes AA/AAA batteries, replace them immediately. Low batteries cause ghost signals.
For gas furnaces: ensure the blower compartment door is completely closed. Even a 1/4-inch gap triggers the safety switch and kills power instantly.
Fix the "Suffocation" Problem
Symptom: Furnace runs for 3-5 minutes, shuts off, waits, then tries again (short cycling).
Cause: A clogged air filter traps heat inside the unit, triggering the High Limit Switch safety.
Fix: Pull out the air filter. Is it dark gray or black? Replace it immediately.
Don't have a spare filter at 11 PM? Run the system WITHOUT a filter for one night only. Better to have heat than frozen pipes.
Reset the Circuit Breakers
Go to your electrical panel and locate the "Furnace/Air Handler" (Single) or "Heat Pump/AC" (Double) breakers.
Even if the breaker looks "ON," flip it firmly to OFF, wait 30 seconds, then flip back to ON. Sometimes tripped breakers don't visually move positions.
Gas Furnaces: Read the Error Codes
Modern gas furnaces (Carrier, Trane, Lennox) communicate via LED flash patterns visible through the sight glass. Count the flashes.

Heat Pumps: Solve the Ice Problem
Northern Virginia's "wet cold" causes heat pumps to freeze.
If the unit makes a "whoosh" sound and steams, it is in Defrost Mode. This is normal. Wait 10 minutes.
Gently clear snow at least 2 feet away from all sides using a broom (never a metal shovel).
If the outdoor unit is dead but you have power, switch thermostat to "Emergency Heat". This uses expensive electric strips, but keeps you warm.
Townhouse Special: Exterior Vents
If you live in a townhouse in Woodbridge, Reston, or Ashburn, your furnace likely vents through the side wall. Check the white PVC pipes for snow drifts, ice, or bird nests.
If the exhaust is blocked, the pressure switch shuts down the furnace to prevent Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
